TriNerds had a great showing at the inaugural Vietnam Triathlon in Hoi
An on August 11 (I just got back from vacation). It was also great to
see two former Bangkokians who have since moved to Ho Chi Minh – Greg
Brown and Matt Walker.

The resort was luxurious as promised, right on a white sandy beach
with a 100 meter pool to compensate for the missing crystal blue clear
waters of the South China Sea. Luckily, the threatening typhoon went
elsewhere and on race day the sea was calm and started out as an
overcast day, perfect weather for the 100 competitors. The swim was
two loops of 750 meters with what seemed like a very long beach run
inbetween, enough to get you panting anyway.

The bike was on a course closed to traffic, and it was, with the
exception of trucks, buses, cars and motorcycles. The small field made
for a very spread out and lonely bike ride for some of us, but luckily
there was always a motorcycle to overtake in the hopes there was a
push biker ahead. The 40km loop went along the the sea for 11kms, then
by rice fields and went through Hoi An town which made for an intense
ride that required lots of concentration to avoid hitting and being
hit by various moving objects.

The 10km run was two loops, including a bit through a fishing village
and a long flat stretch by the sea. The path through the village was
nice, with kids out cheering us on, running with us and even handing
out just picked flowers to the female competitors.

We had a few awards (practical Vietnamese lamps made locally), with
two teams picking up 2nd and 3rd prizes and I got 3rd in my small age
category.

Overall, it was a well-organized race and when combined with a holiday
I’d say well worth the trip.

A very good race, well documented, organised and executed… And this time, the weather was kind….

Swim very choppy water but numbers well controlled and start and waves off on time…. (Well it was Singapore…)

I don’t like wave starts. 5 minute intervals meant I had about 3 groups of fast swimmers behind who caught me, and lost of others and they powered through…. I was ok but some of the others around were very distressed. June watched and said quite a lot of people were pulled from the swim, probably the choppy water. Swim took 50 minutes which is about right for the distance under those conditions. I planned on the high side, 60 minutes so well on target there….

Run to the bike transition was a long run, probably half k. to the bike area. Slow, methodical transition and did everything correct, no shirt on backwards, forgetting bottles, glasses or anything, just according to plan and off…. first 10k on the bike was under 24 minutes so nicely on target, then the next 4 x 20 k loops around the town were very fast. No hills, just a couple of long bridges. l touched 52.5k on the down hills and managed to get round in 3.27.10, including another slow, precise transition…… Really glad I put on a pair of bike shorts on top of my tri pants.

Got a bit screwed with my nutrition. On the third lap of the bike I thought my camel back was empty but there was a kink in the tube and nothing was coming through so I stopped drinking when it it was still about half full. That didn’t have any bad effect as I had bars and gels…(in abundance… far too many as I had planned for a 4 hours bike….)

Transition off the bike was great, just hand in the bike and they give you the run bag. Changed ok, put more powder and water into the camel back and off…..Started the run ok but when I took a drink from the camel back it was like drinking paste. Because the bag was half full and I added more powder, it was way too concentrated. Still, lots of water stops on the course, and electrolites and power gels so I threw the camel back away (after carrying it full for 10k..!!.) and just used the stuff on the course. Plenty of nutrition and fruit available so no problems and marshals trying to get rid of the stuff. Finished with more gels than I started….

About 15 minutes into the run a very heavy shower came down for about 15 minutes which was excellent. But, 10 minutes after it stopped, we were running in a steam bath again. First loop of 10 k about 1 hour 20 so well on track for the 3 hours target.. Nice shaded run for the most part and no hills… Second lap a bit slower but another heavy downpour helped to keep the temp down. Finished the run in 3.02, just two minutes outside of the plan… Had I known, I would have run a bit faster…..or at least walked a bit faster

Finally crossed the line at 7.20.36…well under my planned 8 hours…. Not too bad a state, managed to walk around comfortably and collect all the kit together again…and of course the finishers medal….

What I did like was at the end they had a big pool ( well about 4m in diameter and about 75cm deep) with really cool water. You just stood in it and soaked your legs, really good idea… What could have been better, well I like to see Km markers. There was none on the bike course and on the run there was only one at 4k and I didn’t see any more. And the finish line was away from the spectators, nobody saw you cross the line. Just small things which I am sure they will correct next time…
Next race for me..? Certainly no longer distances but maybe another 70.3 in Singapore, anywhere else would probably be hilly and too long. I managed this one but it would take a lot more work to do anything more….

Now makes the Phuket distance seem like a walk in the park…..
